“LET'S GET SOCIAL!” Is what you will hear in the loudest and most enthusiastic voice possible as the final orientation, session 7, begins. Orientation is led by a group of outgoing and friendly SCU students. The Orientation Leaders execute their role so well I felt like I truly belonged at Santa Clara by the end of the first day. Orientation is arguably the most valuable experience upon entering into college because it helps to situate you within your new home...

Living away from home can be terrifying, but SCU makes sure that it will be your home

away from home. The 8 different residential halls, called Residential Learning Communities, all have their own themes, from sustainability, to Italian Culture, to integrity.

My RLC is Alpha, and also known as Graham Hall. Alpha’s theme is integrity, therefore throughout the buildings we have integrity bulletin boards. We have weekly discussions about issues...

Having a driver’s license can be very convenient even if you aren’t planning on getting a car. You’ll be able to rent Zipcars if you have a driver’s license, and your driver’s license can also serve as a form of ID. You’ll need a Social Security Number (SSN) in order to get your driver’s license, so the first thing you need to do is to get an SSN if you don’t have one yet.

Before taking the driving test, you first need to take a written test in order to get you...

Getting a phone and a number is always one of your first concerns when going to live in a foreign country for a long time. What are the local bank options?

There are several banks in the United States. And there are two banks that are closest to the SCU campus, Wells Fargo and Bank of America. I personally recommend Bank of America as they have a branch right off campus and an ATM near Benson (dining hall on campus). But it is ultimately up to you where you’d like to conduct your banking, these two banks are just convenient.

How do I set up an account?

You can walk to the BOA (Bank o...

My name is Shelby Bi, and I am a Sophomore majoring in Child Studies. I am from China and have been in the US for almost 7 years. Coming to a new country can bring about a lot of new changes and a lot of questions. Along with, what seems, a hundred other tasks to complete upon coming to school you should be educated on the healthcare system and options available to you. I know being sick and going to a hospital can be very scary sometimes and something no one...

Going to school in not only a different area but also a different country is a huge achievement and as an international student I applaud you. I hail from New Delhi, India and all my life I had been preparing to attend college in the United States. I come from a background where my family and friends instilled in me the love for reading and as I grew up a flair for all American shows and movies. My reading, movies and songs all prepared me for t...
