Moving to another country has several challenges. One of them for me was never having food from home. Adapting to the american cuisine isn’t necessarily the best experience, especially when the daily options are limited to what is offered at school. Don’t get me wrong, we’re blessed with a pretty amazing cafeteria. But there’s nothing like the taste of a home cooked meal. However, being in the Bay Area is a great opportunity to expand one’s culinary experiences (and pretty much just taste some amazing food). So here are some of my top choices.
#1 Santa Clara Farmer’s Market @ 950 Jackson St (Saturdays 9am-1pm)
This is certainly my number one Saturday event. The Santa Clara Farmer’s Market not only has some amazing food, but it is also a great way to start off the weekend. They have everything from indian food, to kettle corn, to the freshest fruits and vegetables in the area, you won’t go wrong if you choose to go there for lunch or breakfast. It’s only about a 10min walk from campus and it also has some great live music!
#2 Día de Pesca
If you’re looking for some good and original Mexican food, then this is the place to go. Here you find all sorts of tacos, delicious burritos, and the best part, all for a good price! Don’t be afraid to try their fish, scallop, shrimp… and those sorts of tacos. Although ideally this would be only a short drive away from campus, you can also choose to walk there if you’re feeling like burning some calories or you just want to stretch your legs.
#3 Bill Café and Sara’s Kitchen
These are both excellent breakfast places in the area. Bills Café includes a broader menu but Sara’s has amazing eggs and many of their dishes come with a side of pancakes! Although Bills is only a short walk from campus, it also usually has a longer wait on the weekends (especially in the late mornings).
#4 Jasmine Thai and White Elephant
Both are excellent options if you’re looking for some Thai food. Curries, noodles, name it, they all taste amazing. Jasmine Thai is a shorter walk from campus but White Elephant has great coconut rice. Take your pick!
#5 Bill of Fare, San Jose
Another great breakfast place but a couple more minutes further from campus (it’s still only a short drive away). Make sure to try their omelets! They also serve fried rice for breakfast!!
#7 Kenji Sushi, San Jose
If you’re looking for some very good sushi place in the area but a menu with a great variety, this is the place. Although it requires a car (or some sort of transportation) to get there, this place is only a short drive away from campus.
Although these are some great places to eat around the area, if you’re feeling like making your own food, most dorms include one or a few kitchens. So if you want to make that one dish that you would always eat at home, invite some friends and I’m sure they’ll be happy to try some new foods. The two best options for shopping for ingredients are The Cellar Market (located in the basement of Benson) and Safeway (just across the street from Benson) since they don’t require much of a commute. However, if you’re looking for some more specific ingredients, those might only be found at Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s. These are also only a short drive away from campus. So whenever you wish to treat yourself with some good food, don’t hesitate to explore the area. We have some very good options nearby!
