Living away from home can be terrifying, but SCU makes sure that it will be your home
away from home. The 8 different residential halls, called Residential Learning Communities, all have their own themes, from sustainability, to Italian Culture, to integrity.
My RLC is Alpha, and also known as Graham Hall. Alpha’s theme is integrity, therefore throughout the buildings we have integrity bulletin boards. We have weekly discussions about issues relating to integrity such as vigilantes, plagiarism, and many more.
We are pre-enrolled in either a critical thinking and writing class, religion class, or cultures and ideas class with the people from the same RLC as a way to meet people and study together. It is really nice saying hi to them as we pass by each other in the hallways, or ask them questions about assignments.
A lot of the other colleges have RA’s, but in SCU we have CF’s, which stands for community facilitators. Not only do they ensure safety in the halls, they also put on programs within the halls to help us bond. We have building wide activities, as well as activities within our own wings. I have met my closest friends at SCU in the activities within my hall.
I had a hard transition to college, but being in a RLC and having a CF that genuinely cares about you and wants you to have a good college experience is reassuring and I really feel at home. One of the best moments I have had so far is playing poker in the middle of the hallway at 2 in the morning and my hallmates joining us as they walked by. We were able to do this, because our CF makes sure we get to know each other during the first weeks of school, so that we can create long-lasting memories together.
I am so glad I am part of Alpha and a member of the SCU community!
