At the Heart of Silicon Valley

June 5, 2018

A lot of you chose SCU for its perfect location at the heart of Silicon Valley. However, while being at the perfect location is important, getting involved with the Silicon Valley early is the key to learn more about the fascinating innovation culture here.

SCU offers a lot of unique events and experiences for students who want to join the startup world in the future.

Clubs & Organizations

SCU Association for Computing Machinery is Santa Clara’s premier organization for computer science and computer engineering. They help with the development of CS and CSE skills and provide networking and community outreach opportunities for students at Santa Clara University. They hold events like “Block Chain Workshop”, HackforHumanity Hackathon, and guest speaker lectures every quarter.

The CIE helps prepare students for entrepreneurial leadership through a variety of opportunities within diverse organizational settings providing networking, educational and advisory services. Every Monday, CIE invites SCU alumni to come over and share their own startup stories. Also, they have startup office-hour each week and seasoned professors or entrepreneurs will provide one-on-one advisory to students who want to start their own companies.

On-campus events

SCU HackforHumanity

HackforHumanity is organized by SCU ACM. It is a 24-hour hackathon that aims for social good and usually held at March.

Broncos Hack is a 24-hour competition organized by SCU OMIS Student Network and sponsored by many tech companies like Github, Oracle, Google, and Make School. The winner may win up to $3000 cash prizes.

SCU Business Competition

The annual Donald L. Lucas Business Pitch Competition allows student teams to pitch their business plans for a chance to win the $10,000 prize to start their business plans.

Though SCU offers a lot of opportunities for students interested in entrepreneurship, there are still a lot of things we can do to make SCU a more innovative campus. Currently a lot of students who don’t belong to the clubs or organizations above are working on new things like lectures, startup events, networking events to make this community more supported for future entrepreneurs. So, besides joining the events, I encourage you to start you own ventures whenever you have an idea. It is very easy to find people with similar minds here at SCU.
